Welcome to our Project Spotlight series, where we highlight the exciting work and transformation stories of our recent projects. We're excited to share the journey of Locust, a residential improvement and redevelopment project that perfectly exemplifies the Light Oak Homes approach. From its inception to its stunning completion, Locust showcases our commitment to quality, creativity, and client satisfaction.
The Vision and Initial Planning
Locust is a property with great character, situated in a beautiful location with an open space view. When we purchased the property in September 2023, we saw immense potential and envisioned transforming it from a dated three-bedroom, three-bathroom home into a spacious, modern five-bedroom, four-bathroom residence. The project began with detailed planning, budgeting, and vision casting to set the stage for the transformation.
Vision Checklist
Our initial vision for this space included:
Expanding the living space to accommodate a growing family
Creating an open-concept layout for a more fluid and modern living experience
Updating the entire interior with designer finishes
Adding functional and stylish outdoor spaces for entertaining
Fully finishing the basement to provide additional living and recreational areas
Concept Development
By October 2023, our team had developed a comprehensive concept for Locust. The property, originally built in 1987, required significant updates to meet contemporary standards and our vision. Our goal was to open up the space, enhance the overall living experience, and modernize the home with thoughtful design and high-quality materials.
Key Concept Features:
Transition from a three-bedroom, three-bathroom layout to a five-bedroom, four-bathroom configuration
All-new interior design with modern finishes
Improved open-concept layout to enhance flow and usability
Addition of a 1,500 square foot finished basement
Creation of a new outdoor space designed for entertaining
Pre-Construction Phase
The pre-construction phase, also in October 2023, involved finalizing our design standards, creating property renderings, and preparing architectural and engineering sets. We submitted the building plans to the authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) and received quick approval, allowing us to move forward without delays
Improvements and Progress
By November 2023, the vision for Locust was set, and our team commenced the full remodel. This included replacing all windows, doors, trim, flooring, and completely updating the kitchen and bathrooms. Unique touches were added throughout the property to enhance its character and appeal.
Progress Milestones:
Installation of new windows and doors
Upgraded flooring throughout the home
Modernized kitchen with high-end finishes
Refurbished bathrooms with contemporary fixtures
Newly finished basement adding significant livable space
In February 2024, the property continued to evolve into a more open and refined space. Notably, the living room and patio space underwent significant transformations. We replaced the old bay window and tired landscaping with a large three-bay slider and a new patio, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow ideal for entertaining.
The Finished Results
Locust was completed in March 2024, emerging as a fully updated five-bedroom, four-bathroom home ready for move-in. The transformation was nothing short of spectacular, with each element carefully designed and executed to meet the highest standards.
Before and After:
Before: A dated three-bedroom, three-bathroom home with limited space and outdated finishes.
After: A modern, spacious five-bedroom, four-bathroom home with an open-concept layout, designer finishes, a finished basement, and a beautiful outdoor entertaining area.
Light Oak's Favorite Part of the Project:
Our favorite part of the Locust project was creating the open-concept living area that seamlessly connects to the new patio. The large three-bay slider not only floods the interior with natural light but also provides easy access to the outdoor space, making it perfect for entertaining and family gatherings. This transformation truly embodies our commitment to blending functionality with beautiful design.

Locust: From House to Home
The Locust project is a testament to the Light Oak Homes approach — intentional decision-making, meticulous planning, and a dedication to quality. This transformation showcases our ability to exceed expectations and deliver homes that are both stunning and practical.
